Shallow water off Matheson Hammock Park

 Matheson Hammock Park

Description: Matheson Hammock Park is a Florida State Park.  There is a small admission fee to the park.  Don’t expect beautiful blue water and an expansive beach.  The shore is rocky, the water is shallow.  The bottom is mostly mucky and muddy.  The protected water of the bay is perhaps a half mile across.  However, there is a pretty substantial expanse of shallow flat water making this spot a really good place to learn to kite.

Like Crandon Park, Matheson Hammock Park is dominated by a single kite school.  The rules are a lot more relaxed at Matheson Hammock Park.  Basically if you are an IKO upwind independent kiter you can kite here without a fee, other than the admission fee tdiso the park.  If you are not independent you must take lessons or be “supervised” by Adventure Sports, the company that has the concession at the park.  Adventure Sports is owned by the Pryde Group, the company that started as Neil Pryde in windsurfing and today controls US distributions rights to brands such as Cabrinha.
